Description

A Korean street food favorite, Korean grilled squid is smoky, savory, and a little spicy. Perfectly tender rings of squid marinated in gochujang, garlic, and sesame oil, grilled to perfection and garnished with green onions and sesame seeds.


Ingredients

  • 2 medium-sized squids, cleaned and cut into rings
  • 2 tablespoons gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon honey or sugar
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds, for garnish
  • 2 green onions, chopped, for garnish
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon fish sauce
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon chili flakes
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon lemon zest

Instructions

  1. Clean the squid: remove the head, entrails, and beak, rinse under cold water, and slice into rings. Pat dry.
  2. Mix marinade: In a bowl, whisk gochujang, soy sauce, sesame oil, honey, garlic, ginger, and rice vinegar.
  3. Marinate: Add squid to marinade, mix well, cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  4. Preheat grill to medium-high and oil the grates lightly.
  5. Grill squid for 2–3 minutes per side until opaque and lightly charred.
  6. Transfer to serving platter and garnish with sesame seeds and chopped green onions.
  7. Serve hot with optional dipping sauce or steamed rice.

Notes

Do not overcook the squid to prevent a rubbery texture. Pat squid dry before marinating to ensure maximum flavor.
