  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

Soft, chewy, and authentically delicious, this Lebanese pita bread is perfect for scooping dips or wrapping your favorite fillings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup warm water (about 110°F)
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon za’atar spice mix
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine the warm water, yeast, and honey. Stir gently and let it sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, mix flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in yeast mixture and olive oil.
  3. Stir until dough forms, then knead on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled.
  5. Preheat oven to 475°F (245°C) with a baking stone or inverted baking sheet inside.
  6. Punch down dough, divide into 8 pieces, and roll each into a ball. Flatten into ¼-inch thick circles.
  7. Transfer to preheated stone or sheet and bake for 3–5 minutes until puffed and lightly browned.
  8. Remove from oven and cover with a clean towel to keep soft. Repeat with remaining dough.

Notes

Ensure water is the correct temperature to activate yeast. Avoid over-flouring to keep pita soft. Let oven fully preheat to help bread puff properly.
